Pailou is an urban subdistrict of Wanzhou in northeastern Chongqing, on the Yangtze River. From above, the terrain shapes everything. The broad river, widened by the Three Gorges reservoir, fills the low ground, and streets climb the steep slopes above it in curves and switchbacks. Buildings stand close together wherever the land flattens enough to build.
Wanzhou has long been one of the main river ports on the upper Yangtze. The filling of the Three Gorges reservoir in the early 2000s raised the water level and led to extensive reconstruction of the riverside districts. The city is known for dishes such as Wanzhou grilled fish.
