It is a Poqomam Maya town, and its layout keeps the classic Guatemalan pattern: a central plaza with the church, a grid of streets around it, and neighbourhoods that loosen into farmland and steeper ground at the edges.
The town's best-known feature is the enormous ceiba tree that shades its central square and market, a landmark often pictured in guides to Guatemala.
