Phuntsholing is Bhutan's main gateway from India, a commercial town in the Chukha District where the foothills of the Himalaya meet the plains. It borders the Indian town of Jaigaon, and the ornamental Bhutan Gate marks the crossing between them. The town is packed onto a narrow strip of flat land, with a tight grid of streets filling the space before the hills rise abruptly behind it.
