Pianosa lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea south-west of Elba, and its name reflects what the map makes obvious: this is a flat island. There are no mountains to bend the roads, only a low plateau edged by modest cliffs and rocky shores. The outline is compact and roughly triangular, with a small projection to the north that gives it a recognisable profile.
The only settlement is a small village beside the harbour on the east side. From there, a handful of straight tracks run out across open land. For much of the modern era Pianosa was a penal colony, and later a high-security prison that closed at the end of the 1990s.
