Pikine is located in the Dakar region, east of the city centre on the Cap-Vert peninsula. It was created in the early 1950s to rehouse residents moved from central Dakar and has grown into one of Senegal's largest urban areas in its own right. On the map it appears as a dense field of small blocks with few large open spaces.
Some of the older areas follow planned grids, while later neighbourhoods grew more informally and have less regular street patterns. A Pikine map poster shows both.
