Ponferrada lies in the Bierzo basin in the northwest of Castile and León, surrounded by mountains. On a map the old town sits on a rise above the Sil River near its meeting with the Boeza, while newer districts spread across the river in a more regular pattern of avenues and blocks.
The town's name comes from an iron-reinforced bridge built in the eleventh century for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, which still passes through the centre. Above the river stands the castle of the Knights Templar, one of the best-known medieval fortresses in Spain.
