Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, spreads across gentle hills at the edge of a broad plain. Its map shows layers from different periods: a small, irregular old quarter of winding lanes near the historic mosques and bazaar area, and the straighter blocks of twentieth-century growth around it. Newer neighbourhoods climb the slopes to the south and east, where the street patterns loosen and follow the contours of the land.
The centre is organised around Mother Teresa Boulevard, a long pedestrian avenue lined with cafés and public buildings.
