Puducherry, long known as Pondicherry, sits on the Coromandel Coast of south-eastern India, and its map begins with the sea. A straight shoreline runs north to south along the Bay of Bengal. Behind it, the old town is laid out as a rectangle of streets crossing at neat right angles, a legacy of the French, who governed the settlement until 1954.
The historic town was divided in two. The French administration was based in the seaside quarter, often called the White Town, and the Tamil quarter lay to the west.
