Rio das Ostras lies on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro state, between the resort region of Cabo Frio and the oil city of Macaé. The town stretches along the Atlantic in a long, thin band. A sequence of beaches, coves and rocky outcrops lines its seaward side, and the river that gives it its name enters the ocean near the old centre.
Growth accelerated as the offshore oil industry expanded in nearby Macaé, turning a quiet fishing and holiday village into one of the fastest-growing towns in the state.
