Saint Cloud grew up on both banks of the Mississippi River in central Minnesota, and the river is the defining line on its map. It runs through the city from north to south, crossed by several bridges, and the downtown grid sits on the west bank. The area's granite quarries gave Saint Cloud its nickname, the Granite City, and flooded quarries and parks still mark the landscape to the west.
