Sankt Wendel is the district town of the district of the same name in the north of Saarland, in south-western Germany. From above, the old centre is a compact knot of curving streets on a gentle rise, with newer neighbourhoods spreading along the valley of the Blies. Wooded hills and farmland surround the town, softening the edges of the built-up area.
The town takes its name from Saint Wendelin, a hermit venerated across the region. His tomb lies in the Gothic Basilica of St. Wendelin, which has made the town a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The basilica stands at the heart of the old town, and the older streets still converge on it.
