Saskatoon sits on the open prairie of central Saskatchewan, and the South Saskatchewan River runs through it on a long diagonal. The river is the defining shape of any map of the city: a broad band with steep, wooded banks. It separates downtown on the west side from the university and the older residential districts on the east.
Because so much depends on crossing the water, Saskatoon is often called the City of Bridges. Several road and rail bridges link the two halves, most of them close to downtown.
