Sestroretsk sits on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, part of St. Petersburg's Kurortny District. On a map it reads as a long strip of town between open water and forest. The coastline curves gently towards the southeast, and a line of streets runs roughly parallel to it. A thin band of beach and pine separates the houses from the sea.
Just inland, the Sestroretsky Razliv spreads out as a large, irregular reservoir. It was created in the early eighteenth century to power an arms works founded under Peter the Great, and the town grew up around it.
