South River is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, named after the river that runs along its side before joining the Raritan. From above it reads as a small, closely packed town. The area's clay deposits supported brickmaking and related industries in the nineteenth century, and the borough later drew many immigrant families, particularly from Eastern Europe.
