Sundance Resort lies in a side canyon off Provo Canyon in Utah, directly below the eastern flank of Mount Timpanogos. It is deliberately small, a scatter of cottages, lodges and a modest ski area set among forest, with a road following the creek up the canyon. From above the built area barely interrupts the landscape, and the mountain dominates the whole composition.
The resort is closely tied to Robert Redford, who bought the land in the late 1960s and shaped it around conservation and low-impact development. His independent film programmes took the Sundance name, and the Sundance Film Festival grew from them, though the festival itself has been held in Park City.
