Edge of Medan
The tight grid of Medan gives way here to longer arterial roads and scattered housing clusters, so you can see on the map where the city shades into its surroundings.

Ang mapa
Sunggal Map Poster & Print
Sunggal sits on the western edge of greater Medan, where the city's dense street pattern starts to break into longer, looser roads. From above, it has no single centre. It reads as a series of neighbourhoods strung along main routes, with lanes branching off into housing and patches of green that were farmland or estate land until fairly recently.
The ground is almost completely flat, part of the coastal lowland of North Sumatra that runs down to the Strait of Malacca. Small rivers and drainage channels wind across it at irregular angles and interrupt the road network in ways that show up clearly in black and white. On a Sunggal map poster, these thin water lines add some movement to an otherwise level landscape.
The name has a place in Indonesian history. In the late nineteenth century, local Malay and Karo leaders fought the Sunggal War against Dutch colonial expansion and the tobacco concessions that were taking over the Deli lowlands. Today the area is mostly a suburban and commercial zone of the Medan metropolitan region, but the old name still marks that episode.

Lowland waterways
Narrow rivers and drainage channels cross the flat plain at loose angles, and they print as fine curving lines between the blocks.
Former estate land
Irregular open parcels between the neighbourhoods reflect the Deli plantation era, when large parts of this lowland were given over to tobacco.

Bakit Sunggal
Isang mapang may kahulugan
For people from Sunggal, or with family roots anywhere in the Deli lowlands, this map shows a place that rarely appears on a wall. It is ordinary streets and waterways, the ground people actually walk and drive, drawn cleanly enough to hang in any room.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates, for example a family name or the year someone moved away, and then pick one of five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
