Surbiton lies in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in south-west London, directly south of Kingston town centre. Its western edge is defined by the Thames, which curves past a long riverside promenade. From there the map climbs gently into streets of Victorian and Edwardian houses, with the railway line cutting a clean diagonal through the middle of the district.
Surbiton grew rapidly after the London and Southampton Railway arrived in 1838, earning it the nickname Queen of the Suburbs.
