Şurmān sits on the flat coastal plain of northwest Libya, between Zawiya and Sabratha, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean. From above, the town is shaped less by landmarks than by lines: the main coastal highway running east to west, a looser grid of local streets spreading out from it, and the calm, nearly straight line of the sea to the north.
Around the built-up core, the map breaks into a patchwork of plots, tracks and field boundaries. This is farming country, and olive groves and irrigated land surround the town in every direction.
