Świebodzice lies in Lower Silesia between Wałbrzych and Świdnica, where the Sudeten foothills meet the flatter land to the north. On a map the historic centre forms a tight knot around a rectangular market square. Streets lead out along the valley of the Pełcznica, and housing estates spread up the slopes.
The town has a long industrial past and is known especially for clockmaking. The Gustav Becker factory was founded here in the nineteenth century, when the town was called Freiburg in Schlesien, and its clocks sold across Europe. The tradition is still part of local identity.
