Terdāl lies in Bagalkot district in northern Karnataka, on the dry, open country of the Deccan plateau. The Krishna river flows a short distance away. From above, the town has a clear shape: a dense old centre of narrow, crooked lanes, a looser ring of newer streets, and then wide cultivated land in every direction.
The town is known for its Jain heritage. Terdāl has long been associated with an old Jain temple, and that link gives it a significance beyond its size.
