Tonbridge grew where an old road crossed the River Medway, and the map still tells that story. The High Street runs roughly north to south through the town, crossing the river beside the castle, with older buildings lining it closely. The Medway splits into several channels here, so the center is threaded with water, towpaths and small bridges that stand out clearly in black and white.
The castle is the town's defining landmark: a Norman motte with a large thirteenth-century gatehouse set above the river, surrounded by lawns. Nearby, open riverside grounds and sports fields form a green belt along the water.
