Torbat-e Jām lies in Razavi Khorasan province in north-eastern Iran, close to the borders with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. From above, it sits on a broad, open plain. The town grew around the tomb of Sheikh Ahmad-e Jām, a Sufi mystic and poet of the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
