Três Passos lies in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, in a region of gently rolling hills not far from the Uruguay River and the border with Argentina. The town centre is laid out as a regular grid, a pattern shared by many of the agricultural colonies of southern Brazil. It stands out clearly against the irregular farmland around it.
Past the last blocks the map turns into a patchwork of fields, strips of woodland and streams winding through shallow valleys.
