Vinkovci lies on the Bosut river in eastern Croatia, in the wide, flat plain of Slavonia. On a map, the Bosut winds slowly through the town, and the streets arrange themselves around it. Beyond the built-up area, long straight field boundaries and country roads run out to the horizon.
The town is regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Europe. In Roman times it was Cibalae, the birthplace of the emperors Valentinian I and Valens. Much later, Vinkovci became one of Croatia's most important railway junctions, and the tracks still form a major part of its outline.
