Kremlin hill
The historic kremlin sits on raised ground at the centre, and the streets around it form a small radial knot that marks the town's oldest layer.

Ang mapa
Volokolamsk Map Poster & Print
Volokolamsk lies in the far west of Moscow Oblast and counts among the oldest towns in the region, with written records going back to the twelfth century. Its name refers to a portage on the Lama river, where boats were once dragged overland between waterways. That trade route is the reason the town was founded.
At the heart of the map is the kremlin, a raised site with a cathedral and earthen ramparts. Streets radiate from it into a mostly low-rise town of wooden houses, later apartment blocks and small river valleys. The Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery, one of the notable monasteries of old Russia, stands a short distance outside town.
A Volokolamsk map poster shows a town whose outline has barely changed from its medieval core. The streets still spread out from a single high point, with water and meadow around them. It suits anyone with roots in the Moscow region, and anyone drawn to the old towns west of the capital.

River valleys
Small rivers and their green valleys wind through and around the town, softening the street pattern with curved open strips.
Portage heritage
The town was named for a portage on the Lama river, a reminder that its position on the map was chosen for trade between waterways.
