Wilmington is Delaware's largest city, set where the Christina River and Brandywine Creek approach the Delaware River. The downtown grid stands on the ground between the two waterways, with Rodney Square near its centre. The Christina curves along the southern edge past the redeveloped Riverfront. The city traces its origins to 1638, when Swedish settlers built Fort Christina, the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley. Later the Brandywine powered mills in the area, including the gunpowder works that became the DuPont company.
