Wuhai sits where the Yellow River runs north through western Inner Mongolia, squeezed between the Ordos plateau and the ridges that lead toward the Helan Mountains. On a map the city reads as several separate settlements rather than one: districts spread along the river and the foothills, joined by long straight roads across open, empty ground.
