From above, it is a mountain landscape: a small central settlement, with roads and paths winding across the slopes to scattered villages. This is a region with a strong Lenca heritage, and indigenous communities make up much of the population of the area. The land is farmed in small plots, often on the slopes, and the climate at this altitude is cooler than in the Honduran lowlands.
