Yangliuqing sits on the western edge of Tianjin, and the first line the eye follows on its map is the Grand Canal. Its southern stretch loops past the old town in slow curves, and the historic lanes gather along the bank. The town gave its name to Yangliuqing woodblock prints, the colourful New Year pictures that Chinese households pasted on doors and walls for centuries.
