Yufu covers a mountainous part of Oita prefecture in Kyushu, and its best-known district, Yufuin, sits in a small basin below Mount Yufu. On a map the terrain dominates. Lake Kinrin, fed partly by warm springs, often steams on cool mornings. Mount Yufu, with its distinctive double summit, rises to the northeast.
