Zarqa River valley
The river's course runs through the city as a winding band, a rare line of water in a dry landscape and the reason a town took root here in the first place.

Ang mapa
Zarqa Map Poster & Print
Zarqa grew up along the river that gave it its name, one of the few permanent streams in this part of Jordan. On the map the river valley bends through the urban area, and the city's blocks press outward from it onto the surrounding plateau in a compact, closely packed pattern with few large open spaces.
Once a small settlement on the Hejaz Railway, Zarqa expanded rapidly through the twentieth century as industry, military bases and large numbers of new residents arrived. It is now one of the most populous cities in the country and part of a continuous urban belt that reaches through Russeifa toward Amman in the southwest.
A Zarqa map poster shows that growth plainly. Older quarters with irregular lanes sit near the centre, while newer districts on the edges follow straighter, more planned grids. The highways leading toward Amman and out to the eastern desert frame the city and give the composition a clear sense of direction.

Dense residential fabric
Tightly packed streets fill most of the urban area, and at poster scale they produce a fine, almost textile-like pattern of small blocks and narrow lanes.
Link to Amman
Major roads run southwest toward the capital, and on a wider view the two cities read as parts of one continuous built-up region across the plateau.
