Zgierz lies immediately north of Łódź in central Poland, and its map shows how closely the two are linked: main roads and tram routes run south into the larger city, while Zgierz keeps its own compact centre around the old market square. The land is gently rolling, crossed by the valley of the Bzura river, which rises nearby.
In the nineteenth century Zgierz became one of the first centres of the region's textile industry, after an 1821 agreement brought weavers from Germany and elsewhere to settle there. Their legacy survives in the Weavers' Town, a quarter of wooden and brick workers' houses near the centre.
