Al Quşayr lies south-west of Homs, on the fertile plain of the Orontes river, not far from the Lebanese border. The town is compact, with streets gathered around its centre and roads heading out to Homs, to the border and to surrounding villages. Beyond the houses, the map is dominated by farmland: orchards and fields divided into long plots across the flat valley floor.
The area has a long history. The ancient site of Kadesh, known for the battle between Egyptian and Hittite armies in the thirteenth century BC, lies nearby on the Orontes. More recently, the town was heavily affected by fighting during the Syrian war, and many residents were displaced. A map cannot show all of that, but it keeps the shape of the place as its people knew it.
