Arvin Map Poster & Print
Arvin lies in Kern County, near the southern end of California's San Joaquin Valley, where the flat valley floor begins to rise towards the Tehachapi Mountains. From above it is a tidy grid of residential blocks around a small commercial core, surrounded on every side by the rectangular geometry of irrigated farmland, with orchards, vineyards and row crops laid out in large parcels.
Agriculture has shaped the town from the start. During the 1930s the nearby Arvin Federal Camp, known as Weedpatch Camp, housed Dust Bowl migrants and appears in the background of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. In 1952 the Kern County earthquake on the White Wolf Fault caused serious damage in Arvin and the surrounding area.
An Arvin map poster captures the discipline of the valley: straight section roads, square fields and a town that fits neatly into the grid. The farmland around it shows as a steady pattern of lines, while the edge of the frame hints at the foothills where the orderly valley ends and the mountains begin.

Compact town grid
The town itself is a small orthogonal grid of residential blocks and a short main street, with clear edges where housing meets the fields.
Toward the Tehachapis
To the south and east the land rises, and the regular pattern of farm roads gives way to the looser lines of the foothills.
