Ascheberg lies in the Coesfeld district of the Münsterland, south of Münster. It is a municipality of several parts, Ascheberg itself, Herbern and Davensberg, each with its own small centre around a church. On a map these villages appear as compact clusters in a flat landscape of fields, hedgerows and scattered farmsteads. Country roads link them in long straight stretches.
The A1 autobahn passes close by and cuts a firm straight line through the rural pattern. Near Herbern stands Schloss Westerwinkel, a moated castle whose water-ringed grounds form one of the more unusual shapes in the area. Moated houses like this are typical of the Münsterland, and they give the map small rectangular islands of water.
