Baniachang is an upazila town in Habiganj district, in the Sylhet Division of north-eastern Bangladesh. It is often described as one of the largest villages in Asia. The reputation comes from how widely its neighbourhoods spread across the land, not from a dense urban centre. On a map the settlement appears as many clusters loosely joined by paths and roads.
Water shapes almost everything here. The area lies in the haor region, a low basin that floods for months during the monsoon, and homesteads are built on raised ground between ponds, canals and wetlands. From above, the pattern looks like islands of houses and trees set in a network of water that changes with the seasons.
