Bole, also called Bortala, is the seat of the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Xinjiang. Seen from above, it is a compact and carefully planned city, with wide avenues crossing at right angles, large blocks and generous green strips. Around it the Bortala River valley opens into irrigated farmland. Beyond the farmland lie dry plains and the rising foothills of the Tian Shan ranges.
The city lies not far from the border with Kazakhstan, and the nearby Alashankou crossing links China with rail routes into Central Asia. Sayram Lake, a high alpine lake known for its clear blue water, lies within the same prefecture. To the east the saline Ebinur Lake marks the low point of the basin. The region is home to Mongol, Kazakh, Uyghur and Han communities.

The river runs past the city through a valley of irrigated fields. Its soft, winding line contrasts with the straight streets of the urban grid beside it.
Roads to lake and border
Highways leave the city towards Sayram Lake in the mountains and the Alashankou border crossing. They form long straight strokes that run across the open plain to the edges of the frame.
