Bristol, Tennessee, shares its downtown with Bristol, Virginia. The state line runs down the middle of State Street, so one side of the street is in Tennessee and the other in Virginia. On the map, the city's grid of streets fits into the valleys and ridges of the southern Appalachian foothills, spreading outward from this shared centre.
Bristol is known as the Birthplace of Country Music, based on the 1927 Bristol Sessions, recordings that introduced performers such as the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers to a wide audience. The city is also home to Bristol Motor Speedway, whose oval shape appears clearly on the map to the south of the city centre.
