From above it has an open, spacious layout: dirt and laterite roads branch between low-density neighbourhoods, and the built-up area fades gradually into gardens and bush rather than stopping at a clear edge.
The surrounding region is known for artisanal diamond mining, which has shaped the local economy and drawn people to the town over decades.
