Chũ lies in the hill country of north-eastern Vietnam, in the area long known as Lục Ngạn, now part of Bắc Ninh province. The town sits in a valley surrounded by low, rounded hills. Its streets gather along the main road and spread across the flatter ground nearby, while orchards cover the slopes around it on every side.
Lục Ngạn is famous across Vietnam for its lychees, and each early summer the harvest brings traders and buyers to the area. Much of the landscape around Chũ has been shaped by this one fruit. Orchards climb the hillsides, and small roads link the farms to the town's markets. For much of the year the harvest organises local life.
