Codlea sits in Brașov County, on the western rim of the Bârsa Land, the flat basin surrounded by the Carpathians. Directly above the town rises Măgura Codlei, a wooded hill that stands out from the plain. On a map the town lies spread at its foot, with streets fanning out on the level ground and the hill creating a clear edge to the north-west.
The town was founded by Transylvanian Saxons, and it keeps a fortified church at its centre, a typical feature of the region. Around the church, the older streets follow the long plots of a traditional Saxon village layout, with houses facing the road and gardens stretching behind. Newer districts and industrial areas fill in toward the railway.
