Daoukro is a regional town in central-eastern Côte d'Ivoire, in a landscape of low hills, patches of forest and plantations. Its map shows a centre where the main routes meet, a loose grid of residential streets around it, and unpaved roads that become thinner and more scattered as they reach the farmland and villages on the outskirts.
The area has long depended on cocoa and coffee farming, which shaped both its economy and the scatter of settlements around the town. Daoukro is also widely associated with Henri Konan Bédié, the former president, whose home region this is, and that connection brought the town national attention over several decades.
