Luisenplatz and palace
The square with its column and the neighbouring Residenzschloss form the city's centre point. Main streets and tram lines meet here before spreading outward across the map.

Darmstadt Map Poster & Print
Darmstadt lies in southern Hesse, where the flat Rhine plain meets the wooded hills of the Odenwald. The centre is organised around the Residenzschloss and the Luisenplatz, which has the tall Ludwig column at its heart, and broad streets lead out in several directions. Parks such as the Herrngarten and the Prinz-Georg-Garten sit beside the old core, and forest reaches close to the city on almost every side.
Darmstadt calls itself a City of Science. It is home to a technical university, the European Space Operations Centre and the GSI research centre, where the element darmstadtium was first created. On the Mathildenhöhe, the artists' colony founded in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig left a group of Art Nouveau buildings, including the Wedding Tower. The ensemble was listed by UNESCO in 2021.
A Darmstadt map poster brings these layers together: the streets around the palace, the larger grid of nineteenth-century extensions, the rail lines toward Frankfurt and Heidelberg, and the dark mass of forest on the outskirts. The balance of dense city and open woodland makes a clear, well-proportioned composition in black and white.

Mathildenhöhe
The hill east of the centre holds the Art Nouveau artists' colony and the Wedding Tower. On the map it appears as a small, park-like area with curving paths.
Forest surroundings
Large woodlands surround Darmstadt, especially to the east and south. They give the city sharp edges where the streets stop and the forest begins.
