Donghe is the main town of Wangcang County in the hills of northern Sichuan, close to the Shaanxi border. From above, the land sets the plan. Buildings fill the flat ground along the valley floor, and the contour lines rise steeply as soon as the streets run out. Settlements like this grow long and thin, following the water rather than a grid.
On paper the river is the spine of the composition. Roads run beside it on both banks, bridges stitch the two sides together at intervals, and short lanes climb a little way up the slopes before giving up. The result is a dense, elongated core with a quiet margin of hillside around it, which gives a poster a clear line and plenty of breathing room.
