Ech Chettia lies in the Chlef province of northern Algeria, a short distance from the provincial capital. From above it reads as a dense core of short streets set into open agricultural land. The plain around it is flat and wide, so the town's edges are drawn less by terrain than by fields, roads and the gradual spread of newer housing.
The wider setting is the valley of the Chelif, Algeria's longest river, which gives the region its name and its farming character.
