Fort Collins lies in northern Colorado, where the Great Plains meet the first ridges of the Rocky Mountain foothills. The map reads almost like a diagram: a regular grid of arterial roads with College Avenue running north to south through the middle. Horsetooth Reservoir forms the long western edge, and the Cache la Poudre River curves along the north.
The city began as a military post in the 1860s and grew into an agricultural and university town. Colorado State University's large campus sits just south of Old Town. The historic downtown, with its brick storefronts, is often said to have inspired Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland, and Fort Collins is also known for its many craft breweries.
