Gondā is the headquarters of its district and of the Devipatan division in eastern Uttar Pradesh, on the flat, fertile plain north of the Ghaghara river. The map reflects that setting. There are no hills or coastline to shape the city, so its form comes from roads and rails: a tight, irregular core of lanes and markets, with newer neighbourhoods spreading outward along the main routes.

Gonda Junction is an important stop on the North Eastern Railway, where several lines meet, and their tracks pass the city in long straight runs that cross the street pattern.
