Houghton-Le-Spring Map Poster & Print
Houghton-le-Spring lies south-west of Sunderland, in the part of the old Durham coalfield now within the City of Sunderland. For generations the town was built around coal mining, and the pits shaped its growth until they closed in the late twentieth century. Its annual Houghton Feast is one of the oldest traditions of its kind in the region.
The map is defined by landform. The town grew around a hill, and the old centre sits close to the church, with streets climbing and curving around the higher ground. The most striking feature is the Houghton Cut, a deep cutting through the limestone ridge that carries the main road east toward Sunderland. It is clearly visible even at map scale.
A Houghton-le-Spring map poster shows a town that has changed a great deal while keeping its shape. Older terraced streets, later housing estates and the road through the Cut all fit together on the sheet. For former mining families and anyone who grew up in the town, it is a map of shared memory.

Terraced streets
Rows of terraced houses, many built for mining families, appear as tight parallel lines, a pattern familiar across the old Durham coalfield.
Hill and church
The old centre gathers around the church and the higher ground, with streets curving around the hill instead of following a straight grid.
