The Iruma River runs through the city, and its streets spread across the ground on either side. Residential neighbourhoods form a fine, irregular mesh around the stations, and the outer areas open into fields and wooded slopes.
Iruma is part of the Sayama tea region, one of Japan's northernmost major tea-growing areas, and neat rows of tea bushes are part of its landscape.
