Īz̄eh sits on an upland plain in the north-east of Khuzestan, where the lowlands of south-west Iran give way to the Zagros. From above, the town is a dense patch of streets on level ground, and the mountains around it show up as long parallel folds. The contrast between the built-up plain and the empty ridges is what gives the map its shape.
The area has been settled for a very long time. In earlier centuries the town was known as Malamir, and the valleys nearby hold Elamite rock reliefs, most famously at Kul-e Farah and Eshkaft-e Salman. They are among the better-known ancient carvings in the region and draw researchers and visitors to what is otherwise a quiet provincial town.
A Īz̄eh map poster shows the town at the scale people know it: main roads leading in from the surrounding valleys, a tight grid of residential blocks, and farmland pressing against the edges. Roads from the valleys
A handful of main roads enter the town from different directions, tying it to the rest of Khuzestan. They form the strongest lines on the poster and give the street pattern its structure.
Dense residential blocks
Between the main roads, small blocks and narrow lanes fill the town closely. In monochrome they create a fine, even texture that contrasts with the open plain around it.
